I owned only a couple of Gunne Sax pieces way back when and I so wish I had held on to them! Anyway, I had never really delved into the background of the company until recently. And being in the clothing business myself, stories like this really fascinate me. Born Jessica Gagnon , originally from Maine. Her grandmother taught her to sew at a very young age. They moved to California where she lost her husband in a tragic car accident.
How was your week? On a more down to earth note, work started in earnest on our kitchen. We were able to start some painting work and I was pleased to be able to use some old rollers and brushes I had washed and saved from a couple of years ago.

Died: 17 September , in Coventry, England. Company Website: www. Welsh designer Laura Ashley developed and distilled the British romantic style of neo-Victorianism, reflecting past eras in clothing, textiles, accessories, and furnishings and did so demonstrating classic country styling. Her approach to design was inspired by her environment, the surrounding Welsh countryside, and her yearning to return to all things natural.
Integrating ideas adopted from the designs and qualities of past eras, she combined elements to create a look of nostalgic simplicity and naive innocence. Floral sprigged cotton fabrics, often directly adapted and developed from 18th-and 19th-century patterns, paisleys, and tiny prints worked with romantic detailing to create a style that was original and easily recognized.

The timing could not be better. If there’s been one thing missing from the fashion landscape recently, it’s surely Laura Ashley. In a world of prairie dresses, chintzy florals, ruffles, prim collars and longer hemlines — all of which have been dominating trends for the past few seasons — one couldn’t not think of Laura Ashley, the OG of such designs. Laura Ashley fell off fashion’s radar slightly after its booming success of the s, and its homewares usurped the clothes as the cornerstone of the business.
It is also possible to see some how she took much inspiration from antique make-do and mend Welsh quilts in some of her early designs. The brand of Laura Ashley became renowned for quintessentially British prints and romantic designs and from humble beginnings it grew into an internationally recognised name. At some stage or another I think everyone has either owned a piece of clothing or pair of curtains brandishing the name of Laura Ashley.
Regardless of whether the designs are to your taste you have to admire the original genius behind the textile designs. Now a global empire the business was originally a true cottage industry that saw a husband and wife team utilising their kitchen table and domestic cooker to create the visions of the woman who gave her name to the business. The remarkable woman behind the label of Laura Ashley was the Welsh born, Laura Mountney who with no formal art or textile training just had a natural, inborn talent for design.
Whilst in London she met her future husband, Bernard Ashley, marrying in him It proved to be a productive union that would result in four children and a textile empire. In her early married life Laura demonstrated her flair for design by crafting napkins, table mats and tea-towels from her kitchen table. Laura had a nostalgic heart and a longing for her home-land of Wales that resulted in many of her designs being inspired by old Welsh quilts. These dresses had a rural simplicity to them and the designs were often modern interpretations of antique prints.

Each week, we look into an exciting and innovative label that is taking the fashion world by storm in our regular feature TheBrand. Launched by former fashion editor Rebecca Cohen in , the US brand has become renowned for its ditsy retro prints, breezy white cotton sun dresses and cosy knitted cardigans. Now with childrenswear, swimwear and nightwear under its belt, and with bridal and interiors coming next, the label is morphing into much more than the dress label it once was, heading into the direction of a full-blown lifestyle brand.
We caught up with Cohen to find out how she got here and what might be next. Like many of the most successful fashion brands, Cohen launched her label after spotting a gap in the market. When planning her wedding, she found that there were no bridesmaid dresses that captured what she was looking for, so she decided to make her own.
From here, the label took off quickly. Cohen created a capsule of eight hand-dyed silk dresses and separates — and then collaborated with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow for Goop and Julia Roitfeld for Romy. The following year, Cohen launched at Net-a-Porter and Barney’s with a collection of black and white Victorian-inspired pieces. Now, the brand has become an international success story, with two stores in the US and more to come , while also selling online across the globe at some of the most well-known retailers.

The exhibition is a fabulous trip into the Laura Ashley brand, perfectly capturing a particularly period during the s when Laura Ashley defined the zeitgeist for a return to floaty Victoriana. What the exhibition gives you a great idea of is the re-use and readaption of prints. Changing garment shapes and applying the same print, changing colours and actually chaning the complete feel of the dress. Personal favouirtes for me were the dresses that featured Bloomsbury -esque prints in zingy lime and hot pink.
One of the strongest aspects of the exhibition for me was the labels. These dresses were expertly put into context with the stories of the original owners coming through and making you really examine the dresses. They also helped to give a real idea of the Laura Ashley store experience from a customers point of view. As you can see from my pictures you could get up nice and close to the dresses, and really have the chance to examine them closely.
The space as you rarely find with fashion exhibitions was light and airy giving a chance for a real appreciation of the colour and texture of the dresses. A great job on keeping the public far enough away not to be able to touch, yet close enough to be able to see the detail. A few minor niggles really.
